The role of Intuitive Eating (IE) in body satisfaction and self esteem
As we slowly come out of the 2020 pandemic and return to somewhat normal activities many of us have realised that our eating behaviours over the last 2 years have been negatively affected. Many of us have reported that during the lockdowns we have overindulged in favourite foods and moved less. Interestingly, the global market for weight loss products and services have predicted to grow from $254.9 billion in 2021 to $377.3 billion by 2026. However, it is estimated that 2.7 billion adults will be overweight, over 1 billion affected by obesity, and 177 million adults severely affected by obesity by 2025.

Ageing Well Public Talk (AWPT)
28/04/2022 3:00 pm
- Online
Ageing Well Public Talk (AWPT)
Ageing Well Public Talk (AWPT) Series is an educational intervention that addresses and involves ageing populations as well as practitioners, clinicians, professionals who support ageing populations in their professional roles. As part of the AWPT Series we are exploring how important it is, over our lifespan, to maintain a well-balanced nutrition and hydration as well as regular physical and social activity in the older age (also known as Five Pillars for Ageing Well).
The unique contribution lies in the AWPT Series being highly collaborative and establish Participatory Public Engagement as the main vehicle for co-design, co-production and delivery and impact. The AWPT Series bring and translate the available evidence to the lay people/public, and bring people to share their own experience. This appeals to public and empowers/ enables them to make lifestyle choices that can make them live longer and healthier lives. AWPT Series provide a unique platform for collaboration between diverse communities (members of public, researchers, clinicians, practitioners and stakeholders). These are the most important aspects of the AWPT Series and the related portfolio of work:
- Creating bridges between communities to allow for a mutual flow of information/knowledge exchange
- Empowering populations to self-management and become partners in their own health care
- Co-facilitating a step change in user behaviour and support existing health and social care services provision
- Connecting sustainable, already, existing work, support programmes offered by various organisations and networks that already exist in four nations (England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland).
Self-management and becoming partner in our own health care are very important aspects of these talks especially where this is facilitated via engagement of all involved populations who are ageing as well as practitioners, researchers, clinicians, professionals who support ageing populations in their professional roles. These talks are expected to also have a wider impact in healthcare economies, as ageing and related co-morbidities have a substantial health and economic burden footprint.
AWT Series are aligned with the OU academic mission and address Big Societal Challenges
As the AWPT Series support the OU agenda for innovative teaching and invite co-design & co-production of the series through Participatory Public Engagement where members of public, practitioners & stakeholders contribute to the direction of the AWPT Series, topics and direct input form the members of pubic in co-facilitating the talks.
From the evaluations of The AWPT Series to date, we understand these meet the needs of external stakeholders, members of public, researchers and practitioners who partner with us and support further sharing & dissemination through their own networks. This significantly extends the reach and impact of knowledge shared/exchanged via this Participatory Public Engagement on society, culture, economy and governments across the UK and internationally.
Tackle sustainability and environment – engaged communities are easier to support
We use existing networks and support diverse communities to engage with their health and wellbeing and connect the two in a sustainable manner. Organisations are able to support more effectively communities that are engaged in their health and wellbeing and lifestyle choices.
Support / empower communities with behavioural change and persisting issues around equality
We are supporting the government (local and central) and the NHS in their aim to prevent disease and prevent hospitalisation through focussing on sustainable self-management and educational intervention linking to the five Pillars for Ageing Well. We engage and work closely with wide and diverse communities through the existing network and network that is being continuously built and developed through the AWPT Series.
